This past winter brought us record snowstorms and floods, continuing collapse of the housing market, and partisan paralysis in Washington. I really look forward to March 20th, the first day of spring, balmy weather, blooming flowers, and the Great American Meatout.

Gregory Iwan: the New Testament and Sacred Heart
Editor: There is a gay couple somewhere in Boulder County with whose lifestyle choices I may not agree. But, considering the New Testament, these two people are MUCH closer to the Kingdom of God than is the Archdiocese of Denver. In at least this case, stature trumps status.
Stanley Silver: The Great American Meatout
Carol O’Sullivan, Jake and Cyndy Brooks: Following church teachings
We have listened with open minds to people’s concerns that the children of a lesbian couple were denied re-admission to Sacred Heart of Jesus School. We, too, are saddened by this decision. Yet, we believe the Church and millions of Catholics were guided by our faith to take this position.
Grant D. Cyrus: Stop supporting Israeli incursions
What in the world is wrong with Israel and why do they continue to flaunt international law in continuing to expand their ’settlements’
which is nothing more than continuing to steal Palestinian land? Do they think the world is blind? Have they themselves somehow gotten into a strange form of the Stockholm Syndrome wherein they treat people the way the so called Third Reich treated them? I think so or close.
Tony Burgard: Joe Carnival for Erie Board Trustee
Joe Carnival gets my vote for Erie Board Trustee.
Joe brings a fresh, new perspective to the Board yet will continue to build off our existing town leadership. Joe has the ability to listen and react while representing the people of Erie and maintaining our best interest for today and tomorrow.
John Balassa: Not-for-profit financing of health care is the key
There is an oversight in Brad Segal’s otherwise excellent Guest Opinion of March 14, 2010. He claims that Obama’s health care reform plan “offers significant improvements in all key areas that have been proven to work in health care systems throughout the rest of the developed world.” A missing key area is the removal of for-profit insurance.
Richard Hansen: Health care reform: Sustainable cost is still the issue
After this latest dog and pony show called the health care summit, Democratic politicians will try and push their legislation through Congress using the “Reconciliation” process. The final version may even have a “Public Option”. The overriding question is will this bill really fix our dysfunctional health care system?
Ivan C. Meek: No all-mail elections
Pressure for all-mail balloting is relentless. All-mail balloting seems to me to be more like an administrative procedure than an election.
Michael Durall: College-bound first graders
I read with dismay the front-page article about prepping elementary school kids for college. This is a dreadful idea. Having lived in New England for 25 years, I am all too familiar with the culture of children’s lives being shaped by the college application form.
Beth Billington: Sacred Heart: Not a battle for community to fight
I am a lesbian student in Boulder and I am frustrated by the situation surrounding Sacred Heart of Jesus. Ironically, I am frustrated with the LGBT community’s response to the situation. Of course, it is sad and ironic that a Catholic school would refuse a student on the basis of his or her parents’ sexual orientation (or any other grounds for that matter), but it is still the right of any private institution to set its own rules. I am saddened by my community’s response in protest, anger, ad purchases, and the like. Just as I have freedom of religion, so do Catholics; forcing a private institution to comply with public opinion does not show that we value a different group’s freedom. Instead, it may have the opposite effect on some citizens and show us to value our own desires over the freedoms of others.
Maria Richmond: Hurrah for Stutzman’s immigration reform
Hurrah for Erica Stutzman’s editorial on Immigration reform in today’s Camera. Well said and I agree with her 100 percent.
J. Butterworth: Cyclists dismounting at crosswalks: Not such a simple idea
I understand the good intentions of your point that cyclists should not be riding through a crosswalks. Unfortunately due to the current infrastructure, that ship sailed long ago for Boulder.
Charles Horowitz: Caucusing with the enemy
Disgusted with the polarized stalemate in Washington, D.C., and wanting to do our microscopic part in support of better, my partner and I decided to do something different. Last night, officially as “observers,” we liberals attended the local Republican precinct caucus. Our reasoning was that we need to learn to work with Republicans, and rather than join another Democrats’ pep rally or point fingers at the other side, we would go and see how they worked. We figured they value at least half of what we do–family, health, freedom, safety, and financial stability–and to do our microcosm of the work of de-polarizing and de-demonizing the other team, this could be our tiny contribution.
Karen Thorson: Sacred Heart’s decision a reminder of segregation
I sat down this morning and discussed the Sacred Heart situation with my two children. We are not Catholic. They go to public elementary school. But I was afraid that they might hear about it, or worse yet someone might talk to them about it. I wanted them to be informed. You see my kids have two moms too.
Seth Brigham: Tickets given for revenue, not to protect its citizenry
I’d like to express my disgust at the ticket nazis that walk or drive about our fair town.
This morning, I’m ten feet before the main trailhead of Sanitas.
Martin Mapes: Pledge of Allegiance: Are atheists un-American?
The Ninth Circuit Court says that atheists have no reason to complain; the Pledge of Allegiance is primarily a patriotic exercise. So let’s look at the four ideals you promise to uphold in order to be counted as patriotic.
Elizabeth Jenny: ‘A modern day Christian parable in play’
As in the New Testament, so in modern times, many women get Jesus Christ’s teachings. They are about Love. In the Gospels there is tell of a woman who received Jesus into her home and who directly washed his feet rather than delay her time with him with unnecessary proprietary housekeeping. There are many good women in the New Testament recorded in Jesus’ teachings.
Don R. Sherwood: Not all climate scientists are to be lauded
I’m afraid the illogic of Mr. Selbin is too typical of liberals. A small, close knit group of “scientists” has used fraud and deception to “prove” anthropogenic climate warming is going to kill us all. Of course, when the sun shined on this small group, their credibility has been destroyed.
Guy Korthase: Cutting dependence on foreign oil
Our lack of an intelligent energy policy in the United States impacts our economy as well as our national security. We have tremendous energy resources in this country (right here in the Rocky Mountains), yet we insist on our addiction to foreign oil, simply because it is cheap. What percentage of the energy dollars sent to the Middle East are used to support terrorism? I am sure it is much higher than dollars spent in Colorado.
Jim Riemersma: Scott Kimball coverage
Please! For how many days are subscribers to The Camera going to be required to endure the trials and tribulations of Scott Kimball? On the front page, no less. It is difficult to believe that a majority of Camera readers are interested in this endless chronology of a sick man’s life.
There is a great deal of compelling news on local, national and international events and issues taking place on a daily basis.
