From my perspective as a person engaged in scientific research, teaching, and literacy, it is clear that the GMO discussion has been hijacked by hysterics who have turned their back on actual data and reasoned debate.
One can only be impressed that the Boulder County Commissioners had the wisdom to approve the original Crop Policy Advisory Committee recommendations; a measured position based on data, rather than pseudoscientific
claims and fear mongering.
It seems worth pointing out that smallpox and essentially all diseases are “natural” and that some people oppose vaccination (based on arguments similar to the anti-GMOers), but opposing (and banning) vaccination would have condemned millions to death. “Entertaining” anti-rational, superstitious beliefs has real and significant consequences.
