In an effort to inject some science into the Boulder County controversy over genetically modified organisms, I suggest that readers access the recommendations and conclusions of the most prestigious scientific body in the world, America’s National Research Council (NRC). The NRC has published two reports, both of which are available to the public. The first is “Safety of Genetically Engineered Foods: Approaches to Assessing Unintended Health Effects” and is available at http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?isbn=0309092094. The second is “Impact of Genetically Engineered Crops on Farm Sustainability in the United States,” available at http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=12804.
My reading is that the discussion in Boulder is dominated by wing nuts, with an emphasis on the “nuts.” Please read and judge for yourselves.
