Oh Boulder! We have moved on from saving the prarie dogs to grazing the buffalo! Perhaps if we built the right fence the prarie dogs and buffalos could roam together. Wait a minute, the prarie dog burrows would create a hazard for the roaming buffalo and their burrowing would kill the grasses needed to feed the enormous herd.
What’s that? Oh, it would only be a small group of buffalo? Could I even distinguish them from rocks as I whiz past eager to return to my version of reality?
Ah, but now that we may become a muni perhaps we could burn buffalo chips. And surely we will accept a tax increase to fund the researchers needed to tell the city council whom to hire to manage the herd. Seriously, the idea of seeing these great animals dotting the plains once again gives me a smile as well as a sigh. I prefer bison over beef.
I hope there is consensus in our local government as to the eventual size of the herd and funding in place for proper care. Thank you Mr. Thompson for spearheading a “Support the Herd” Foundation but may I be so bold as to ask those able to give, to remember there are folks in our community who would welcome a helping hand so that they too have a place to bed down with abundant food.
