Paul Dougan insists no Vietnam veteran was ever spit upon, just because a search failed to find news items or police reports of such incidents. What a hoot! A similar search would find no news items or police reports on discrimination against gays in the early 70s, though I’m sure it was the norm. Having just returned from my E Company Vietnam reunion, I know first hand of returning vets being spit on and called baby-killers. I’d put the incidence of this under 3%, but even 1% would be 90,000 incidents. Finally, no self-respecting Vietnam vet would have called the police or the newspapers. He’d have handled it himself and just kept on walking.
