Faith Communities often fail to follow Jesus when they put God in a box of their own creation by misinterpreting what they read in the Bible into saying things that are a distortion of the original meanings. Examples of this are interpretations of the “abominations” in the Bible that were part of a holiness code created to help the Hebrews grow into a unique nation. Abominations included eating shrimp or pork, eating rabbit, wearing two different kinds of cloth at the same time, planting two different kinds of seed in the same ground, and men wasting their semen (seed) by not planting it in a woman. Men’s semen was known (believed) to be all of nascent human life and women had nothing to do with it other than being an incubator. Therefore any other use of semen was an “abomination” because it did not lead to procreation and the growth of a new nation. Abominations were not moral sins but violations of a severe code of conduct defining expectations of normal and usual daily life to promote the emerging nation.
