Recent letters to the Daily Camera reflect a constant rant against the rich, bordering on hate-crime levels. The Democratic Party is clearly running on this envy plank in their strategy for 2012, and Camera readers seem to enjoy the frenzy.
But for the mathematically challenged, and surely Obama is one of this group, taxing the rich more will not make a dent in the deficit. It will, however, generate support among this hate group and calm them, much as bread and circuses have in the past.
What’s becoming increasingly clear is not just the incompetence in Washington, but the tilt now toward not just disingenuous use of numbers, but the willful misuse of numbers to frighten, encourage hate, and obscure the lack of meaningful progress. But lying too often works. And public lying, from no matter the pulpit, comes with electoral justice that’s neither swift nor sure. Sadly.
