Scott Schmidt: Lack of historical knowledge

Regarding “Southern discomfort” in Sundays Camera a few thoughts. Given the poor understanding of American history by most- not all – younger  folks,   it  is no surprise to me that the Pew poll cited in the article stated  ” 6 out of 10 people under 30 thought the major reason the Civil War broke out was concerning states rights ” .  As historian and author David McCullough recently recalled he began worrying about the history gap some 20 years ago when after an appearance at a “  very good mid-western university” a college sophomore told him that until his talk, she never knew  the 13 original colonies were all on the East Coast. I remember  a few years ago while talking to some 20 something’s, they did not know if Vietnam was before or after the Korean War and had no idea who the “allies” were during WWII.  Today’s lack of interest (?) or understanding of American and world history is frightening. To quote the late Carl Sagan, ” you have to know the past to understand the present”.
