This article is targeted toward the greedy landlords in downtown Boulder. You know the ones that want us to feel sorry for them because they have a glut of $1M+ condos on the market. Trust me, my friends and I are your demographic and target cliental to buy one of those condos. I cherish the idea of living downtown. My friends all feel the same way. Give us a reason to move there though. These are the same landlords that have systematically evicted and shuttered some of the best attractions for us in the city. Nearly every music venue, with the exception of the big ones like the Boulder and Fox Theaters are gone because of rent pressures. Nearly every one of my friends mourns the loss of Trilogy/B–Side and now the Draft House. Places where you could go see a band for a buck or two during the week. These were places to see up and coming local talent as well as diverse music attractions. Nearly every city has a plethora of places to see Jazz, Blues, Reggae, R&R, etc. They are a necessity for a thriving downtown scene and draw people to want to live there. Sure, there are a few places like the Pub or Lazy Dog where they shoehorn a band into the corner every now and again. It’s not the same thing. Our property managers seem to think that yet another Mexican restaurant is what we want. The stage at the Draft House was actually recently removed in favor of a waterfall. A waterfall? Really? I can walk over to the Boulder Creek if I want to watch water flow. Bring back the music and the atmosphere. Without it, your condos will continue to be vacant and your new restaurants will continue to go under. Perhaps, a lower rent for places that offer these services may be a longer term and larger benefit for you overall. Don’t let your greed suck any more of the soul out of the city than you already have. Give us a reason to buy downtown!
