To the Editor:
As gasoline tops $4 a gallon nationally, it’s time for consumers to get a break. One easy way for that to happen is for Congress to enact swipe fee reforms now.
Credit card fees, known as “swipe fees,” are hidden in the cost of nearly everything consumers buy. In 2008 alone, American merchants and consumers paid over $48 billion in swipe fees.
As we approach summer and Congress is thinking of delaying the reforms that small business owners and consumers so desperately need to make ends meet and that are supposed to be enacted this summer, I hope folks will let their Senators and Representatives know that we need relief now and that we can’t allow credit card companies to continue to ratchet up the prices for consumers on everything they buy with their credit cards, including gasoline.
