It seems a long way to fall—from the elevated conversations and inspired speeches (not to mention a wonderful “after-glow” ) of the recent World Affairs Conference to the pointless self-indulgence of the marijuana Smoke-Out, which leaves not an “after-glow”, but a large mess, many arrests, and a huge cost for the University. I have lived in Boulder for 30 years and have been pleased and proud not only of its unmatched beauty, but of the thought its citizens have given to keeping its glorious surroundings pristine yet compatible with, and encouraging of, a healthy lifestyle. The “spirit” of the “Smoke-Out” seems inimical to those aims. Can Boulder continue to permit a gathering of 10,000 uninvited people to create this costly mess for others to clean up? Think about it!
