I am struck by the connection between two stories in the Camera in the last few days. The first story starts with “The United States’ massive appetite for drugs is fueling the rampant violence in Mexico… former Mexican President Vicente Fox said Wednesday night during a talk at the University of Colorado.” The other story covers the upcoming 4/20 marijuana celebration at CU.
Are the people who will attend the 4/20 event going to be using drugs that pass through the hands of Mexican drug cartels? We have conflict-free diamonds, fair trade coffee, and cruelty-free cosmetics. Why don’t we hear demand for violence-free drugs? We know that the demand for these drugs is what is fueling the violence in Mexico. I would encourage everybody who is attending the 4/20 event to make sure that any illegal drugs they use do not have blood from the Mexican drug cartels on them.
