The next time you wax eloquent about the sweet mysteries of December and you include graffiti in your list of “unsolicited public art” and you say it’s creators (spray can in hand) are “expressing themselves in unconventional, provocative and illicit ways, but “Just like conventional art, it’s beauty and worth are in the eye of the beholder” Please excuse me while I throw up.
When you or your neighbor (like my neighbor across the street) wake up and find “beauty and worth” spray painted on their property and have to pay hard earned dollars to have it removed, you might see it from a different perspective. Take off your high minded, Oh so intellectual spectacles and get real. Graffiti has it’s roots in inner city gang banging. Real blood get’s spilled, real lives are destroyed or deeply wounded. Boulder doesn’t have the real thing. You and I can rest easy in our privileged comfort zone. But we don’t have to be fools.
