Adam Fedor: Stop the Food Safety Modernization Act

The Food Safety Modernization Act (S.B.510) is a bill that that has come up relatively recently.  It’s already cleared the House and will be voted on in the Senate as soon a next week.  The goal of the bill sounds great, who wouldn’t want safe food? But it’s no coincidence that it’s supported by major corporations and factor farms (General Mills, American Frozen Food Institute, etc) and opposed by many small farm groups.  At one point it would have essentially made it illegal to grow food in your own garden, but there has since been an amendment put in to exempt farmers and businesses with less than 500K in sales. Even with that it will create a huge bureaucracy (costing over $1.4billion) and place a burden on small farmers, co-ops and farmer’s markets, even though most of the recent food problems have been from large corporations. It would essentially give the FDA right to tell us what foods we can eat and where we get them. If you are concerned about really making food safe, and not just giving big corporations a tool to put small farmers out of business, call or email your Senator and tell them to vote no on S.B.510.

Today, I went to the beach front with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed.
