There are lots of solid reasons to vote Yes on 1B. One good reason is because open space is important to our local economy.
First, open space is a boon to property values. Surrounding counties have seen values dip up to 20% — in Boulder County it’s more like 3-4%. I think it’s worth paying about a dollar fifty a month in additional sales tax in order to help keep our real estate market strong.
Our Open Space also gives us a competitive edge in attracting and retaining the kind of businesses we want. I work with Active Boulder: a coalition representing over 150 businesses located in Boulder County largely because of our quality of life and the open space. But other towns such as Portland, Oregon and Ogden, Utah are competing for these same businesses. Ogden has over a dozen trail heads from the edge of town into the Wasatch Nat’l Forest. We can’t rest on our laurels – to continue our leadership position, we should continue to acquire land and build trails.
And, not only is some of the most important, beautiful remaining land around places like Heil and Hall ranches now available, this is the best time to buy land. If 1B passes, we will be able to issue the bonds now, buy the land when prices are as low as they’ll ever be, and pay the bonds back over time – after the recession is over. This is a smart business move.
There are lots of other reasons to support open space – to keep farming and ranching alive, to get more trails, to preserve views and wildlife – but it is worth supporting for its economic value alone. Please vote yes on 1B.
