Passage of 2B will advance Boulder’s effort to replace the Excel franchise fee and set our city on the path toward a clean, sustainable and independent energy future. Passage of 2B will enable Boulder to purchase and distribute electricity just as Longmont, Fort Collins, Loveland, Colorado Springs, Lyons, Estes Park, Fort Morgan, Frederick, Glenwood Springs and twenty other Colorado cities already do. Passage of 2B will enable our city to replace Xcel’s dirty coal with our own clean renewable energy supplies.
Myths about 2B abound. Some naysayers claim 2B will raise costs to electric consumers. Untrue! 2B simply replaces what we already pay to Xcel with an equal payment to the City of Boulder to continue city services and keep our city employees paid. As green technologies are perfected Boulder’s electricity will become cleaner and cheaper. Another myth is that city-supplied power is more expensive and unreliable. Again: totally untrue. I lived in Fort Collins for 29 years. Besides paying less, we rarely experienced power interruptions, except during big snow and windstorms. Since coming to Boulder, interruptions are so frequent I don’t bother to set half of my digital clocks. Another lame myth says green energy will never replace coal and gas. Exxon and BP would like you to believe that. Great strides have been made to make green technologies cheaper and more reliable. Meanwhile, supplies of coal and gas dwindle, pollute our air and wreck our climate.
