Forget about Summit County once and for all. The ultimate Front Range ski destination is not the place to visit. It is an eyesore, especially when that Lake Dillon is only partially full. A-Basin, Keystone, Copper Mountain and Breckenridge are mediocre at best, a crowded second-rate amusement park at worst. I know it is close to Boulder. I know the season passes are inexpensive. I know there are accommodations and eateries and shopping venues. Nevertheless, driving the interstate to partially scenic Dillon, Silverthorne or Frisco has become a nightmare. Too many vehicles, too many slow drivers, too many fast drivers. The nightlife sucks – there are 3 men for every girl, 10 men to every beautiful girl. You simply cannot escape the flood of humanity that has come to accept Summit County as their home away from home. I have an idea – ski at Eldora, Monarch, Crested Butte or Wolf Creek. These, more isolated, ski resorts need your patronage. The towns are smaller, the skiing is just as good and the people are much more friendly. The lift lines are virtually nonexistent. It should go without mention that people party in small ski towns, too. Combined a daytrip to Eldora with a visit to the nearby casinos in Blackhawk/Central City in the evening. There is even return RTD bus service from Denver to Boulder to Eldora everyday during the ski season. Monarch has a backcountry snowcat operation. Valley View Hot Springs is not too far away. Crested Butte is near the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument and Park. Wolf Creek gets great snow and there are hot water pools for bathing in Pagosa Springs.
