Yesterday, an article ran in the Daily Camera, followed by a story on ABC Channel 7 News. Both imply that CU Boulder is padding its pockets by providing student mailing lists to credit card companies to aggressively sell credit cards. Fortunately, neither CU Boulder nor Elevations Credit Union is engaged in this practice. While Elevations’ agreement with CU Boulder has a provision for a quarterly participation fee for the Buff OneCard, Elevations does not:
-buy student mailing lists; aggressively market credit cards to students
-send direct mail solicitations to students; encourage students to financially get in over their heads with credit cards
-get rich from our agreement – nor does CU
However, Elevations does:
-provide financial literacy education both on campus and through our online FoolProof program
-serve as a resource to the University for unbiased consumer financial information
-support CU programs and provide scholarships to students
Elevations Credit Union was established on the steps of Macky Auditorium at CU in 1952. We have worked together for 58 years to provide financial solutions for a better life and a better community. CU Boulder is entertaining proposals from other financial institutions for the services we currently provide. I want to personally thank the one in every four households in Boulder County who are members of Elevations; many of you are faculty, staff, students and alumni. You have supported this partnership since its beginning. It is our hope that when the University reviews all of the proposals, they conclude that Elevations will continue as their partner for many years to come. We applaud the attempt of these reporters to expose unscrupulous acts that banks across the nation participate in that exploit consumers, particularly university students. Fortunately, neither CU Boulder nor Elevations Credit Union participates in such practices.
