Ms. Butterfield’s 9/19 Sunday column pointing out that the officer had the gun and the power is well put. It’s important that our Police officers realize the power differential.
I believe that as a whole our Boulder Police are admirable, fair, and safe in interacting with all citizenry. Having watched our emergency personnel first hand I have been struck with gratitude for their courage, and impressed with their individual interactions in the line of duty.
I wonder what’s making some so unhappy as to act so entitled to be verbally abusive, provocative, and create caution and a sense of unsafety in interactions with community members.
A law officer’s respectful interactions with citizenry engenders communication and safety.
Sergeant Yamaguchi is the officer in charge of the Professional Standards Unit of the Boulder City Police Department. His number is 303-441-3312. I encourage anyone to call him to give feedback regarding abuse of power from any Boulder police officer. Officer Yamaguchi also receives compliments to the Boulder police force, or an individual officer. Asking for a business card of an officer allows definite identification.
It took me 4 months to carry out the undesired task to report a frightening encounter with a Boulder Police officer. I was ultimately received in a respectful, fair, understanding manner. Difficult as it was, I’m glad I reported – I hope never to go through that again.
In the interest of safety and learning – and in support of our police personnel continuing to maintain balanced interactions while they’re in the realm of extraordinary pressure – please kindly report difficult occurrences to Sergeant Yamaguchi, as well as contact him to highlight remarkably positive interactions.
