With the recent flurry of T.V.advertising showing actors playing middle-class Americans concerned that “Now is not the time for new taxes on oil”, one has to wonder, “If not now….when”?
The ads paint a picture of desperation on behalf of fossil-fuel-folks whining that they will be forced to pass along taxes to consumers of their product, and prices will be raised accordingly.
While this American has no doubts that the fossil fuel industries will try to have the cost of taxes paid for by their customers, I have to remind the creators of the ads that Americans are not as stupid as they would like us to be. ( We are aware of CEO pay, U.S.subsidies, record profits and taxes NOT paid on said profits.)
We are reminded daily of the results of lax regulation and cost-cutting measures that resulted in Gulf of Mexico pollution, American jobs eliminated, wildlife destroyed and certainly most relevant, American workers killed while just trying to make a living and feed their families.
I remember a similar flurry of ads by the corporation that attempted to paint themselves green and convince Americans that they were “Beyond Petroleum”.
I can’t help but think of the millions (perhaps billions?) of dollars that prime-time ad campaign must have cost BP….and how the good people along our Gulf coast need to be compensated for damage caused by British Petroleum’s incompetence and / or non-compliance of basic safety measures.
The current ad campaign , with it’s fine print indicating creation by the American Petroleum Institute, is an insult to Americans collective intelligence.
I’m sure at this point, there are many intelligent Americans thinking it’s time our fossil fuel reserves be nationalized, as is the case in many countries, eg; Mexico, and it’s Pemex.
I suggest that our legislators remind fossil fuel corporations of that possibility.
If nothing else, it will put the fear of God into them, and who knows? It just may result in more responsible industry.
