Patricia Uhlir: A broken immigration system

You may have met him at Head Start, Eisenhower, Burbank or seen him playing football, running track or wrestling at Fairview. Maybe he was in a chemistry or French class with one of your children. Maybe you saw the congratulation sign on our house or felt my pride when he graduated from Colorado School of Mines.  You might have eaten at his grandparents’ restaurant that they owned and operated for 25 years in Boulder. But you probably never knew his hidden secret! Yes my “son” is the hated illegal immigrant, the alien, and the undocumented “criminal

He came to live with our family almost 11years ago. I knew nothing of immigration law and how incredibly difficult if not impossible it is to help a person become a citizen.  He was a teenage boy who did not want to move with his grandparents when they retired to California. He wanted to stay in Boulder, go to Fairview, play sports, and hang with his friends. When he approached our family and asked to live with us – we thought he would be a good influence on our other son of the same age.   It was not until he lost his driver’s license that we began the journey of trying to understand this process to citizenship.  He came here legally to get what his grandparents felt was a better education at age four.  His grandparents did not understand the steps that were necessary to follow so he could be a productive member of our society. As the years progressed and he and I sought the advice of three different lawyers, attended many rallies and got people to sign petitions to pass the Dream Act, that I began to understand the underlying depression and sometime lack of energy that he exhibited.   Presently there is NO ROAD available for him become a citizen, so on July 14th my “son” returns to a country where he does not read or write the language, where he is to live with an uncle he has only met twice and leave the country where he could add so much and leave a family that loves him so much.

Yesterday President Obama talked of a broken Immigration system and I could not agree more.  Please educate yourself about the many issues related to immigration and look beyond Fox News for intelligent information.
