Ellen Steiner (April 29th) can rest assured that Ingrid Newkirk does not wear leather hiking boots. There are wonderful vegan options for all of the items that she listed. As she stated, few of us are saints, but to stop eating animals is the single most effective thing any one person can do to help the environment and ourselves. As the letter writer wrote a few months ago from Thomas Paine’s book ‘Common Sense’: “a long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right, and raises at first a formidable outcry in defense of custom.” There is no reason to destroy the environment by killing billions of animals who live miserable lives and quite often die in horrific ways. “How destructive does a culinary preference have to be before we decide to eat something else?” (Jonathan Safran Foer).
