Steve Taylor: Health care reform
I really enjoyed reading Brad Segal’s health care reform article in last Sunday’s paper. He makes a number of obvious and critical points. But the one little detail missing, from his and all the other commentators, both local and nationally, regards the ” Coverage cannot be denied due to pre-existing conditions”. Continue reading

Jerry Maddock: Comcast switches to all digital
The article “Comcast to Switch to All Digital” (3/26/10) is misleading in the sidebar section “What Will It Cost.” There, it states: “Customers without an existing set top box can receive one standard (italics mine) digital box and two digital adapters at no additional monthly cost.” This is true, but the key word here is “standard.” The “standard” box will not receive and display high definition (HD) TV, so the customer with an HDTV must request an HD digital box to replace the standard digital box. There is no charge for this replacement, but there is an additional charge of $8.00 per month for Comcast to supply an HD signal to the customer, and this charge will appear on the monthly bill. We were surprised to find this charge on our bill, since there was no written or oral agreement that this would be the case. Continue reading

Beth Ornstein: FIRST Robotics Competition
Congratulations to the Fairview High School’s FIRST Robotics team and it’s winning alliance teammates, Nederland High School and Catlin Gabel High School from Portland, Oregon, in the FIRST Robotics Competition 2010 Colorado Regional on May 27! This first-place finish would not have been possible without the cooperation and support of Monarch High School’s robotics team in providing build space or without the financial help of Fairview’s major sponsors including NASA, LASP, McGuckin Hardware, Ball Aerospace, IBM, Autodesk, and Solid Works. Teresa Foster: Clean coal ads are propaganda
Why is Big Coal trying so hard to convince us that coal is cheapest and the cleanest? Why are they fighting against using natural gas as an alternative? How can they afford to buy 3 full-page ads in the Daily Camera?
I guess the coal industry doesn’t want us to move beyond coal. Continue reading

Rochelle Rittmaster: Votes for Superior town trustees
The Town of Superior is in transition from a housing “boom town” to one striving to mature in vision and process. Residents continually feel challenged being “heard” – with concrete issues around new subdivisions, water-rights, capital projects, an unrealized “land swap”, an unfinished park as we sign on for another, and more. Some issues have existed for years, with public inputs largely ignored. Continue reading

Bob Niehoff: AARP Driver Safety Program for seniors
Boulder West Senior Center offers the AARP Driver Safety Program
Senior citizens have an opportunity to save lives and save on their auto insurance. The Boulder West Senior Center is one of the hosts for the AARP Driver Safety Program. By hosting a monthly class at their center they are helping our senior maintain current information about today’s driving rules of the road. This program is geared for our senior drivers. Although thousands have taken the classes in Boulder County over the years it is sad to learn that more than 85% of our seniors have never taken the driver safety class. Continue reading

Mary Rogers: Health care reform will strengthen our country
Observing the acrimony and anger erupting over the passage of health care reform, I was reminded of the anger and desperation I felt seven years ago when Congress authorized the invasion of Iraq. So I can relate to being on the losing end of a legislative battle. But there seems to be a couple crucial differences in the anger being displayed now and then. Continue reading

Richard Strauch: Guided by faith: How far will it go?
In a letter to the Camera published on Sat., Mar.27, 2010 eloquent support for the denial of the continuation of the education of two children at Sacred Heart of Jesus School, based on Catholic faith and teaching, was set forth. Can any Catholic possibly disagree? Continue reading

Tom Parsons: ‘Placing ideology before humanity’
My ideology is better than yours – a dangerous game.
Brian Schwartz reveals exactly what is wrong in American politics. Again on March 27, speaking as one of the Daily Camera’s lay editors, Brian demonstrates what has become popular – placing ideology before humanity. He has powerful bedfellows in doing this – the Christian right, the Muslim right and the Free Market right, to name but three, and frankly they all scare the hell out of me. Continue reading

Ann McCue: Our founders provided health care too
I am writing to answer a question recently posed by Mr. Ron Weinard: “…why didn’t the founders start a form of health care for the people?” In fact, they did. Legislation known as “An Act for the Relief of Sick and Disabled Seamen” was passed by the Fifth Congress and signed into law by President John Adams in July of 1798. Continue reading

Grant D. Cyrus: A word on Tiger
Quite honestly as an avid, avid fan of virtually every sport and
athletic endeavour on Earth I’ve never thought that much of Tiger
Woods. For me it started with his coming out as a kind of pseudo
Cultural Anthropologist of some kind, inventing off the wall new
racial definitions for himself…uh, hold on a minute, what? But be
that as it may I suppose that I, like you, must learn to understand
that handing (well no he earned it) an obviously extremely virile and
highly skilled young man a BILLION dollars moves him into a different
and exclusive world altogether. A world where he like other
billionaires reside and can make their own definitions. Continue reading

Carol O’Sullivan, Jack and Cyndy Brooks: Sacred Heart decision driven by faith
We have listened with open minds to people’s concerns that the children of a lesbian couple were denied re-admission to Sacred Heart of Jesus School. We, too, are saddened by this decision. Yet, we believe the Church and millions of Catholics were guided by our faith to take this position. Continue reading

Miriam Paisner: The enlightened support health care reform
i dont understand why there are so many dumb people out there who hate the new health reform (I guess they hate in general ) or are too stupid to see that (unless you are a CEO of an insurance company), all of this is a step in the right direction. Continue reading

Sarah Massey-Warren: Health care: A nation of ‘me’
Earlier this week, NPR’s “Talk of the Nation” focused on the Senate’s passing of President Obama’s health care overhaul. In interviews with residents of countries that already have some form of single payer system, including most developed countries in Europe as well as Canada, the reporter asked what that person’s country thought of the new direction of the US. Bob Carmichael: Thank you Sens. Bennett and Udall for health care reform
I want to thank both our democratic Senators Michael Bennett and Mark Udall for supporting health care reform. I say this because now in America Insurance Companies know that there are now regulations in place prohibiting premium gouging, denial of coverage for preexisting conditions and dropping us altogether because they decide we are a loss leader. This new health insurance market will also provide insurance for us if we loose our job and have to find a new policy. For way too long the insurance companies have been in the drivers seat and now we have a federal law giving the American people a level playing field. Continue reading

Teresa and Wade Lichti: Three cheers for health care reform
A big Thank You to all our representatives who helped made this Health Care Reform become Law. It is now the law that persons with pre-exising conditions will NOT be discriminated agaisnt. It is now the law insurance companies will NOT be allowed to deny medical care when we need it most. It is now the law that if we have a devastating diagnosis, that will need extensive medical treatments, hospitalization and prescritions filled, we will not have to risk losing our homes to pay for our health care! Donn Ramirez: Health care reform: A victory for all Americans
Passing health reform is a historic victory for all Americans – for families, seniors, young people, workers, and small businesses alike. All Americans will now have the security of knowing that they don’t risk losing the American dream if they get sick or are in an accident. As a person with a pre-existing condition, I can soon get health insurance and have some affordable options.
Thank you Representative Jared Polis for taking the stand for improving the health of so many people. And thanks for standing up to the special interests who have fought for decades to keep families and business from controlling their own health care. You’ll have my support in coming years. Lee Kidder: Rep. Polis, thank you for health care reform
I want to thank Rep Polis for supporting the health bill. There are so many reasons that it was important to get this bill passed. Just one would be the following provision: Uninsured Americans with pre-existing conditions can join a special high-risk pool to get the coverage they need, starting in just 90 days. Continue reading

Kelly and Steve McIltrot: Celebrating health care reform
The passing of this historic health care reform bill means so much personally to our family. For years, my husband, a small business owner, has struggled with paying for medical insurance. For years, because I made the choice to stay at home and raise my two infant children and had a pre-existing condition, I was punished. I had had several melanoma’s in my twenties and thankfully, never had to have chemo-therapy. Continue reading
