I’m writing in answer to R. Eggers who wrote that gridlock in Congress today is a good thing whose cause is the founders’ wish to create stability. I agree that checks and balances are very important. However, especially since Clinton was President, there is ample evidence that the Republican party’s agenda is solely to stay in power, to bring down any opposition by whatever means possible, and to get rid of all social safety nets. There was a lot “wrong with” legislation pushed through by reconciliation during the Bush years—huge tax breaks for the wealthiest people undermining the country’s middle class, a draconian bankruptcy law (a large percentage of bankruptcies are caused by medical expenses), continuing the deregulation of the financial system, which brought down that system, etc. Mr. Eggers says that the Republicans are for health care reform and not for “government health care.” All the evidence shows that Republicans are doing everything they can to bring down any kind of health care reform. And it is a complete misconception that the Democrats’ health care reform is “government health care.” Even with the public option, the government would only set up a structure where people would have a CHOICE of private versus public insurance. Private hospitals and doctors would still provide all services. I wonder, too, if Mr. Eggers realizes that Medicare and Social Security are government-run programs—programs that have been a godsend to seniors, many of whom would have no ability to access health care in their sickest years nor a safety net when they can no longer work. Let’s have a bit of compassion for each other!
