Dear Editor,

It was bad enough the US Supreme Court recently ruled that corporations and unions will be allowed to spend unlimited amounts of money on advertising in our campaigns thus greatly influencing their outcomes.  At least Democrats and Independents could blame that ill-advised ruling on the conservative wing of the Court.

Now Colorado Democrats learn that Washington heavyweights, primarily President Obama, wish to influence our upcoming party primary.  We had, perhaps mistakenly, thought Coloradoans registered as Democrats could choose the candidate to best serve our interests via the primary process without interference by Washington insiders.  As the Camera pointed out in a February 6 article, Obama is coming to Denver later this month to raise money for and in support of Senator Bennett.  Let us not forget Bennett had never even held an elected office before being appointed to temporarily fill the Senate seat by the governor.   A request by Bennett’s opponent in the primary, former House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, that Obama attend an event for him as well during this visit was rejected.

While I am very upset about the potential effects of the Supreme Court ruling, I must say that Obama’s actions with regard to our primary bother me even more.  Democracy does not thrive when outsiders, as Obama is in this case, step in to influence the outcome of a primary.  Obama’s actions may very well end up splitting his own party in Colorado resulting in a Republican victory in next November’s senatorial election.
