It would be refreshing if even one of our elected Federal officials would so much as lift a finger in defense of Colorado’s medical marijuana policy. Such a move might even be applauded as a sign of leadership on their part.
Instead, all we get is their willful refusal to address the issue, despite Colorado’s enlightened and compassionate marijuana program having been on the books for a decade now. Our state legislature is currently seized with how to regulate this emerging local industry and our congressional delegation has yet to suggest that the overriding Federal prohibition needs some revision, if not outright repeal.
It’s remarkable that Senator Mark Udall remains silent about those Federal laws, which he apparently supports, that still outlaw medical cannabis, even though he’s personally acknowledged his own benign experiences with recreational pot, as have Governor Ritter and Mayor Hickenlooper, to name just two other hypocritical poobahs.
Our congressional officials have done nothing to protect their constituents from the predations of a harsh and unreasonable national prohibition, which President Obama himself has admitted didn’t deter him from consuming lots of Hawaiian bud back in the day.
I would love to ask either Obama or Udall why they expect ordinary citizens to be cowed by anti-marijuana laws, which these two politicians once ignored to no evident consequence.
