Chris Waldheim: Medical marijuana is life-saving

I can’t begin tell you how sick I am of defending my rights. Contrary to popular opinion, medical marijuana patients don’t like discussing all the benefits the medicine provides for them on a daily basis, we do it out of necessity, the necessity of obtaining quality organic medicine, untainted by chemicals or pesticides. Attorney general Suthers is using his new bill to try and recriminalize something not worth his time or effort. Not only will this bill effectively shut down every medical dispensary in Colorado due to lack of business, but it will put many Coloradans back in the arms of their local drug dealer. Who does he really think he’s helping? Certainly not the nonprofit organization running our country. The government’s income is paid in the form of taxes generated by goods and services sold within and outside of the United States. Shutting down dispensaries will only result in a loss of income for them. Congratulations Uncle Sam, you just gave yourself a yearly multibillion dollar pay cut. Continue reading

Dave Johnson: Paid TV football

The Wall Street Banksters, Company CEO’s and our own government are not the only ones taking us down the road of hard knocks. The NFL Football League along with paid TV is also pushing the average American’s tolerance out of the playing field. Continue reading

David Humphrey: ‘The pothole fairies’

T’was the hour before traffic and folks in their homes,
With all still asleep, gathered there the town’s gnomes.
Took with them they did, shovels, picks, axes
To undo the hard work for which we pay taxes. Continue reading

Richard Geertz: President Obama: Not perfect, but preferable

In response to Elin Riley-Weiss [“Eleven Months and No Change,” 12/23] and others, those who are disappointed by actions of President Obama rather naively, I think, confuse the euphoria of election night in Grant Park and the rhetoric of the campaign with the realities of governing. Although, for example, the health care bills passed by the House and Senate are not what I, or Obama, would prefer, is the alternative (no bills at all) really preferable? I think not. And while many would prefer to leave Afghanistan immediately, it’s hardly a betrayal of liberal ideology that he has decided to continue the battle citing the real dangers of failing to do so. Changing presidents has not meant changing everything, nor could it, but we’re fundamentally better off with Obama than with Bush, McCain, or any other president of recent memory. Continue reading

Mary Peterson: Sen.Udall and health care reform

In response to my inquiries about Senator Udall’s views on healthcare reform, I received a letter from his office outlining his requirements for any bill which he would support. There were basically five points on which he would not compromise when it came to reform. It appears that only one of those provisions is in the bill passed by the senate earlier this month yet Senator Udall (and Senator Bennett) voted in favor. Continue reading

R. Kiefer: Obamanation on Wall Street

Once again, President Obama ( for whom I voted, believing that he was supported mostly by small public donations ) in one of his meaningless declarations of presidential rage – which he has been unwilling to back with concrete actions – says that ³ the people on Wall Street just don’t get it.², but he¹s wrong and he knows it! Stephen Bailey: Take back your individual liberties

After decades of intentionally mis-leading the citizenry by insisting the U.S. is a Democracy, a system of majority rule, and not a Constitutional Republic that protects our inalienable rights, our ruling class has exposed that Democracy was a fig leaf hiding their true ambition: Authoritarian government. Health care legislation has been passed by both the House and Senate. A clear majority of Americans oppose the legislation and no authority exists in the Constitution for this Congressional power grab over one sixth of our economy. The corrupt, power-lusting nature of our Congress is on display for all to see; witness the legislative winners and losers and the outright extortion and bribery of senators using our tax dollars and national defense. Susan Martino: Test your homes for high radon levels

Fifty-four (54%) percent of Boulder County homes have unhealthy radon levels, which compares to only 6% of homes with unhealthy levels of radon across the rest of country. Boulder County Public Health (BCPH) urges Boulder County residents to take action during National Radon Action Month by testing their homes for elevated levels of radon. Continue reading

Jim Hoffmeyer: Connecting Bonanza Drive to Vista Parkway in Erie

Admittedly, the Erie issue of connecting Bonanza Drive to Vista Parkway pales in importance to the issues of health care, wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, world poverty, etc. Nevertheless, I want to address this Erie issue and take exception to letter writer John Plancon (Open Forum, December 29th; see also the Daily Camera news article on December 21st). Kelly Murphy: The ‘settled science’ of global warming

In the Fall Semester of 1974 I took a class as part of my engineering studies at CU that was called “Science and the Modern World” under Professor Duane Ball (wonderful guy). The class dealt with the effect man has on the environment. We studied the projections made by Professor Paul Ehrlich (still at Stanford) and a young scientist named John Holdren. They edited a book in 1971 titled “Global Ecology”. Mr. Holdren wrote an essay which predicted that particulates generated by human activity were going to cause a catastrophic new ice age. Much of the class dealt with the upcoming disaster of global cooling. Continue reading

Theresa Haley: What’s in a decade?

I am writing to clarify for Paul D. Seward (December 29) why he is confused by hearing in the “news lately about the last decade.” The current decade started in the year 2000, which was the first year of the decade (and for that matter, the century). Count that as year one, and you will see that 2001 through 2009 make up the last nine years of the decade. Continue reading

Rick Sutherland: Terror bombing attempt

With the possibility of another terror attack on America we should not be surprised. Just a few decades ago America was involved in 50 covert wars supplying arms to the Afghanistan’s to fight the Russians and theYemen’s. America’s fight against the Islamics and Arabs to protect the Jews raised a terror equal to the history of the terror to the Jews which was unprecedented and horrible going way back to World war 11 and the Spanish Insurrection. There may no longer be one oppressor greater than the other. There is only a horrific ignorance that revenge doesn’t bring peace. Continue reading

Jeffery Bahr: ‘Colorado teens hit hard this holiday season’

It should be noted that Thursday’s editorial, “Colorado teens hit hard this holiday season”, was actually a propaganda piece penned by a “senior economic analyst” at the Employment Policies Institute. This “Institute” is described by SourceWatch thusly: “The Employment Policies Institute (EPI) is one of several front groups created by Berman & Co., a Washington, DC public affairs firm owned by Rick Berman, who lobbies for the restaurant, hotel, alcoholic beverage and tobacco industries.” Continue reading
