Dear Editor,
I’m delighted to report that installation of traffic lights is nearly completed at one of the more dangerous intersections I’ve observed anywhere — N. Broadway & U.S. 36 here in Boulder County, just outside the city limits.
Motorists and bicyclists alike have long ignored the stop signs currently in place; near-misses are a daily occurence, and accidents all too frequent.
Even better, a video camera is being installed which looks directly at oncoming traffic from N. Broadway. I listened with some amusement over this past weekend, from my spot in front of the nearby restaurant, as the spandex-clad bicycling scofflaws made negative remarks about both the camera and the traffic lights. They’ll never get it: Stopping is in their own best interest, and a pack of 20 or more bicyclists running through the stop sign has always been exceedingly stupid.
I hope that Boulder County Sheriff’s Office will now begin aggressively enforcing traffic laws at this intersection, ticketing both offending motorists and bicyclists.
