You may have heard that Access Counseling was not approved for 2010 funding from the City of Boulder Human Services nor Boulder County Human Services for a proposed merger with the YWCA of Boulder County. Due to the lack of public funding, Access Counseling will be closing the Louisville Office on November 22, 2009. The Access Counseling Longmont Office closed on November 16th and the Boulder Office closed October 16th prior to the closing on the sale of the building. The Board of Directors has formed a dissolution committee and will be moving forward to dissolve the Family Resource Center, Inc. DBA Access Counseling.
A wise person was once quoted as saying, “ new beginnings are usually scary and endings are usually sad, but it’s the middle that counts and you must remember this when you find yourself at the beginning or at the end.” -unknown
At Access Counseling, we are at the end and it very sad for the Board of Directors, Staff and Interns to say goodbye to the community we have supported for 35 years and in our hearts it feels even more sad for the thousands of people in the community served at Access Counseling.
But for today and forever, please remember the middle and the important work that was done at Access Counseling. Access helped people cope with the past, manage the present and prepare for the future. Access Counseling met the growing demand for services by providing low-cost counseling to individuals, families, adolescents and children. Our clients faced tough situations and life transitions and they relied on us. Our Shared Parenting Program provided a safe environment for parents to transfer their children without conflict and hostility and provided supervised and therapeutic visitation services.
At www.accessboulder.org, a list of referral agencies and individuals to contact for counseling services will be available. In addition, services are available at the Mental Health Center Serving Boulder and Broomfield Counties at www.mhcbbc.org. For the Shared Parenting Program; please contact St Vrain Family Resource Center at www.stvrainfamilycenter.org or the Supervised Visitation Network at www.svnetwork.net
Access Counseling was founded in 1974 and during our 35 years of operation, thousands of clients received counseling sessions provided by hundreds of graduate level (master’s or doctorate) psychotherapy interns who were trained and supervised by licensed professional staff therapists. Many of the former interns are practicing in Boulder County today and we want to thank all of the former interns for the important and valuable time they spent at Access. Many former interns have said, and the Board and Staff will agree, Access was instrumental in the development of the careers of many outstanding psychotherapy professionals around the world.
And to all of you, board members, staff, counseling interns, guild members, volunteers, referrals agencies, supporters and donors, thank you for giving your time, energy, and expertise to help Access Counseling fulfill our mission.
Warmest Regards,
Kim Felton
Executive Director
