We are a retired professional couple who chose to move to downtown Boulder.
We were attracted by the many conveniences but mainly by the city’s commitment
to environmental integrity. However, we will not be living here much longer.
Within blocks of our Pearl Street apartment are several restaurants that use wood-burning
ovens. When the closest oven is operating, the foul odors force us to close every window, and we
cannot use our patio because of the smoke and soot. This weekend a new restaurant “fired up,” and
now the smoke and smell are inside our home.
How environmentally conscious can Boulder be if restaurants are allowed to pump noxious fumes
and known carcinogens into the air? Just google “wood burning and cancer,” and you will see what
a health hazard wood smoke is.
A downtown cannot be vital unless people live in it. There are many new residences on Pearl, Walnut,
and Canyon. Don’t their occupants deserve clean air?
