To the Editor:
Health Care questions surround us right now and we all seem to be wondering what is best. Legislators don’t seem to have all the details and some have even admitted that they haven’t bothered to read some proposed legislation carefully. How can we trust their judgment?
It’s very difficult to know which direction to go, so I want to share the experiences and opinions of my very dear friend Patricia whom I consider a medical professional and “expert witness.”
Patricia was born and raised in Canada. She graduated from nursing school there and then moved to California to work as a nurse. After marriage she eventually moved to Washington State where she raised her two boys and set up a private counseling practice. When her boys reached high school age she decided to move her family back to Canada to take advantage of the educational programs there. Shortly after that move to Canada, Patricia was diagnosed with breast cancer.
When cancer was diagnosed, Patricia and I spoke frequently. She shared her journey with the Canadian government- controlled medical system. I visited her and saw first-hand her frustrations with a health care system that seemed indifferent to her needs. She told me that I should do whatever I can to keep our American health care system out of the hands of governmental bureaucracy. She said, “Despite some flaws, the American health care system is far superior to what is here in Canada.”
Patricia died May 23, 2006. In her memory I am telling her story and hope you also will work to keep health care private and individually controlled while at the same time supporting charitable clinics and social services that provide health care to those in need.
