Hillary Rosner: Why coddle the college students?

I was dismayed to find that while potential landmark status for
Lolita’s merited a story in Sunday’s paper, the spate of vandalism on
the Hill on Friday night somehow didn’t. Packs of students marauded
through the streets, fireworks cracked all night long, and the police
were so outnumbered they couldn’t keep up with pleading middle-of-the-
night phone calls from neighborhood residents. Here are just a few
things that went down: The windows of the Catholic church on Aurora
and 14th street were shattered; rocks were hurled through at least two
windows of a home on Cascade Ave; a clothes dryer was thrown through
the window of a parked Subaru; and dozens of parked cars had their
side-view mirrors smashed. Longtime residents described this as the
worst night on the Hill since the riots a few years ago. And yet the
Camera’s web site is devoted to potential new subdivision development
and recycling cell phones? The city, its police, and even its media
seem content to look the other way as CU undergrads wreak havoc. I can
only imagine what next weekend will bring, with the CSU football game
happening on home turf. It’s time for the university and the city
government to wake up and take action–before another riot leaves all
of us no choice.
