Setting aside that President Obama, Rep. Barney Frank and the Congressional Progressive Caucus all have stated that the Public (Government) Health Care Option is the gateway to their desired goal of a Single Payer Plan, I have a fundamental concern with the government going into competition with private industry.
I own a small business in Longmont and firmly believe in capitalism. This country has for the last 230 years embraced capitalism and capitalism has given us the highest standard of living – from the top to the bottom – of any country on earth. If there are problems within the system, address the problems such as lawsuit abuse, but don’t start a government run business to “keep them honest.” What will be next, a government oil and gasoline company, a government discount store to compete against Costco, Target or Wal-mart?
Every level of government has outsourced services, such as jails and trash collection to private industry, because private industry, working under capitalism, can provide better service and quality at a lower cost. Look no further than UPS and FedEx compared to the Post Office.
Why would we want to forget capitalism and move to socialism by creating a Government Option that would be subsidized by tax dollars and is designed to drive private industry out of the health care market?
