Audrey Fishman Franklin: The People’s History of Boulder

Dear Editor:

No matter what side you may come down on regarding the incident in which an African American Harvard professor was apprehended by the police responding to a possible break-in as he was entering his home, President Obama was entirely correct in seeing the potential of this being a “teachable moment” in the very complex problem of race relations in this country.
The People’s History of Boulder is poised and ready to offer Boulderites incredible opportunities for listening, learning and understanding, with a healthy dose of discussion provided for.  In conjunction with Boulder’s Sesquicentennial (150 year) anniversary, Boulder Community United and Strategies to End Oppression, two local groups dedicated to making Boulder a more inclusive, welcoming and just place, have been working on forums in which underrepresented communites can tell their important histories and experiences.  We are wanting to write of new history of the 21st century in which respect and caring for one another will make for a stronger, more successful Boulder in all areas.
