In the Open Forum of July 25th, a writer chastises Representative Jared Polis for opposing the taxation aspect of President Obama’s health care initiative. She characterizes his opposition as “the height of disloyalty to our president”.
This is an example of the thinking of many Obama supporters. They cannot fathom that it is not a legislator’s job to be loyal to the desires of the President. It is their job to be loyal to the oath they took upon entering congress, and to fairly represent the views of their constituents.
A congressional aide told me that on the morning the cap-and-trade climate bill first became public, her office received hundreds of calls in favor of the bill within a two hour period. They came from Obama supporters, prompted by emails and text messages from political operatives. In that brief period, could these supporters have studied and understood even the highlights of that bill? Of course not! Has our electorate degenerated into armies of unthinking drones locked into a cult of personality? Are we a people subjugated by our own emotional passions? Are we incapable of critical thinking, or perhaps just too lazy to become engaged?
At this pivotal time in our history, let us not be slaves to political parties or personalities. We need open and honest debate on important core questions: What are the basic values upon which our country was founded? Are they outdated or are they timeless? Where do our rights come from, government or our Creator? Is it time to abandon American capitalism for European-style socialism? No politician has the courage to openly debate these issues. But they are indeed boiling under the surface. As Americans, let’s put personality aside and have honest, open debate with each other. It is time.
