The Senate Health Committee voted 12-11 in favor of a two-page amendment sponsored by GOP Senator Tom Coburn that would require all Members of Congress to enroll in the very same health plan Congress wishes to impose on the rest of us. What’s notable is that every Democrat except Dodd, Mikulski and Kennedy voted “no”. In other words, most Democratic Senators who wish to jam a government health care “option” down our throats won’t themselves join such a plan even though Democratic Senators Brown and Whitehouse wrote in a recent Op-Ed, that plan “will offer benefits that are as good as those available through private insurance plans — or better. ” What hypocrites, they vote to inflict it upon the rest of us yet exempt themselves. Are they really that arrogant? (ANSWER: YES)
Even those Democrats who voted in favor know they can rip it out later, far from public and media scrutiny. Judd Gregg was the only GOP Senator to oppose the amendment on humanitarian grounds saying the public option “will be so bad that I don’t think anyone should be forced to join.”
Members of Congress have granted themselves a generous and flexible set of health benefits and have no intention of reducing their coverage. They will rip out the Coburn amendment because they know full-well that the health care “solution” they propose is inferior to and costs more than the care most Americans enjoy today.
My question is… “If it’s good enough for our Senators, Representatives and President to inflict upon us, why isn’t it good enough for them?” There should be NO EXCEPTIONS to the health care coverage. We should all share, and share alike.
