To The Editors,

It seems some Boulderites can’t imagine sacrificing their own “little oasis” for the collective good of the city.

Most people would agree that a “plan to kill trees” is bad. But most people might also agree that as Boulder becomes more populated it behooves the city and its residents to plan ahead for that fact – and that means urban renewal projects, such as the 30th Street improvement plan, which might involve cutting down some trees.

Compared to most cities, Boulder has more trees than it knows what to do with. But now some residents are upset over the removal of a few dozen – a few dozen that the city has, as part of the improvement plan, agreed to replace. In an era in which conservation and sacrifice will prove to be the keys to our country’s success, do residents really need to waste the city’s time and resources fighting something as inane as threatened trees? Is it not enough that Boulder itself is a giant garden?

I would be willing to bet these are the same residents who not only condemn building out, but building up as well – indeed, who often condemn building anything at all. Instead of planning a future for their children, they seem to want to hoard the present for themselves.

For once it would be nice to see these residents quietly taking one for the team rather than arguing with the referee.

Sincerely,

Geof Wollerman
