Bob Greenlee’s “The real Cookie Monster,” printed on Sunday June 28, is a tired cliche of conservative fear-mongering about the evils of government intervention into our lives. Stemming from BVSD’s recent “carbo crackdown” on the sale of candy or soft drinks at school, Greenlee goes further to amplify his web of delusion to articulate how we don’t have a healthcare problem in this nation and a significant chunk of the 46 million uninsured can get insurance but just don’t want to. Greenlee ties cupcakes to health insurance to attempt to demonstrate how government is lurking to penetrate every corner of American life.
As we know Boulder has been called its own planet divorced from reality, well then, what planet is Greenlee living on? In classic Republican style, Greenlee dismisses (wait, doesn’t even acknowledge) the epidemics of child malnutrition or a healthcare crisis. He chides
government attempts to “do something”? No, Bob, government shouldn’t
“do something”, it should do nothing. There is no problem with
sugared-out kids trying to sit still in classrooms. (Oh but wait, Bob, we could give them Ritalin. Augmented Ritalin production would be good for the economy.) And yes, those 46 million who “don’t want”
insurance don’t deserve it. Who really wants health insurance these days anyway, when we will now need to save our money to buy our own sugar products outside of school?
While Barack Obama would like us to believe that there is no problem too great to solve, Bob Greenlee and the Republican Reptiles would like us to believe that we have no problems except for that of the problem solvers meddling into our lives. Greenlee and this sect act as if recovering from a long Orwellian nightmare of government totalitarianism. Fearful wounded boys don?t make good leaders. W showed us that much.
