A recent article about the traffic issues due to the Broadway construction ignores the pedestrian impact.  Typically everyone thinks about cars and traffic.  The construction on Broadway not only impacts automobiles but actually has a larger impact on pedestrians.  Cars and bikes can detour with minor time delays compared to the time it takes for pedestrians to walk the extra blocks to avoid the construction.  On North Broadway near Iris there is no pedestrian option on either side.  Signs advise crossing to the other side but when doing so that sidewalk is also blocked and pedestrians are then completely stranded with no options but to walk in the middle of the street or walk 4 blocks east or west and then 4 blocks back; or they can turn around and go home.  The city has failed to provide adequate and appropriate options for pedestrians during the construction in spite of the fact that Boulder claims to be a pedestrian friendly city.  There has been total and complete lack of coordination or forethought about how this construction project will impact pedestrians.  I have emailed the city and have yet to receive any response.  Probably because there is no logical response.  They screwed up.  I would encourage all pedestrians to call or write to the city and demand that safe accomodation be provided for those of us who walk.  Maybe the city is having problems meeting Kyoto standards for carbon because they force everyone into their fancy SUVs.
