I am the parent of a BVSD elementary student, and I am writing to express my concern over your current negotiations with the teachers in the school district. I understand these negotiations are difficult. I have had to negotiate with labor unions in the past as part of a management team. However, your May 17 op-ed piece in the Daily Camera cited parental preferences as a basis for your reasoning, and I must say, your reasoning is flawed.
I took part in the survey of parents that you described. Trying to extrapolate from that survey to your current position is specious. Those of us filling it out were not doing so with the thought of teacher negotiations. Of course we all know that teachers are underpaid. And, class size and maintaining art/music are important. However, your statement: “We know that our taxpayers generally support increased teacher pay, but a recent district survey showed that maintaining class size and preserving programs like music and art are a higher priority” assumes that you asked us about this situation.
My survey answers were likely in line with your results, but that meant those other issues were a priority before we decided to try to reach parity for teachers with other professions. I certainly DID NOT mean that you should be effectively lowering compensation packages, since you cannot offer teachers a salary increase that keeps up with cost-of-living. Stipends only ensure that teachers fall farther behind.
Teachers are the most critical part of our children’s education. If you had put a question onto the survey about how important it was to maintain good morale and motivation among teachers, that would likely have been universally highly rated. And, if you continue to offer such a limited package with no long term potential, too many of these teachers are either going to look elsewhere for opportunities or, worse, become discouraged and lose motivation. I have seen first-hand the extremely detrimental (and contagious) effects of low morale among workers that feel undervalued.
One of the best features I have enjoyed about BVSD is the highly motivated, caring teachers. Please do not do anything short-sighted in the negotiations that jeopardizes that situation. That would be unforgivable.
