George Narcavage: Save the ash trees from the city

Fluorescent light bulbs are good and non-native trees are bad.  Such is the wisdom of the City of Boulder.
For the second time in recent months the City has decided to execute non-native trees.  According to a sign at the start of the Enchanted Mesa trail adjacent to Chautauqua, the green ash trees in the area have been sentenced to death for being “non-native”.  The green ash trees will be cut down and herbicides will be applied to their stumps so they do not come back.  I asked one of the trees on death row how she defended herself at trial?  She said “I tried to explain to the City trees do good by eating carbon and providing shade for the fern plants that grow in this creek area, but they would not listen.  Mother Nature has accepted our being here, but the City said we must die.”  According to the City sign, the executions will take place between now and May 21, 2009.  Personally, I think the City should be using our money to plant trees, not to kill them.
